Quenching is a heat treatment process used mainly for metals such as steel to increase their hardness and strength. In this process, the metal is first heated to a high temperature, usually above its critical point, so that its internal structure changes. After heating, the metal is rapidly cooled in a medium such as water, oil, brine, or air. This sudden cooling alters the metal’s microstructure, often forming a harder phase like martensite in steel. As a result, the metal becomes harder and more wear-resistant, but it may also become more brittle. To reduce brittleness and internal stresses, the metal is often tempered after quenching.
